The Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (ASCR)

 

The Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (ASCR) is the leading non-university basic research public institution in the Czech Republic. It conducts both fundamental and strategic applied research to create scientific knowledge that contributes to strengthening the nation's position in key areas of science and to finding up-to-date solutions to contemporary problems of the society.

 

The Academy formulates its own scientific policy, advises the state on major issues of its R&D policy, administers national as well as international research programmes, and promotes cooperation with both applied research and industry to foster technology transfer and exploitation of scientific knowledge. Major parts of the Academy's revenues are provided by the state budget of the Czech Republic.

 

Division of Humanities and Social Sciences

The mission of the cluster of 17 research institutes is to promote basic research in humanities and social sciences and also performing related activities. These comprise higher education, public relations, dissemination and application of research results in meeting national needs, and preservation of national heritage.

 

The Division includes 17 institutes and is divided into three sections: 

 

Section of Historical Sciences studies Czech history within a broader international context by means of both field and historical research. It includes: Archives of the ASCR, Institute of Archaeology in Brno, Institute of Archaeology in Prague, Institute of Art History, Institute of Contemporary History, and Institute of History.

 

Section of Humanities and Philology is concerned with the preservation and advancement of culture and education, particularly the literary sciences, classical studies, linguistics, philosophy, ethnography, and folklore studies. It concludes The Czech Language Institute, Institute of Czech Literature, Institute of Ethnology , Institute of Philosophy, Institute of Slavonic Studies, Oriental Institute.

 

Section of Social and Economic Sciences conducts fundamental as well as oriented research focusing on changes of the contemporary Czech society within the European and global context. It includes: Economics Institute, Institute of Psychology, Institute of Sociology, Institute of State and Law, and Masaryk Institute.

 

Three scientific establishments in humanities are operated jointly by the ASCR and universities: Centre for Biblical Studies, Centre for Medieval Studies, Centre for Theoretical Studies.
